Bitter Dream

(Khab-e-talkh) Director: Mohsen Amiryoussefi, IR, 2004, Farsi / Czech and English subtitles, 87 min

A singular, spooky and remarkably visual piece from the Iranian independent cinema, Bitter Dream mixes cinéma vérité and absurdist black comedy to portray the eerie life of a cemetery gravedigger who prepares the copses for their final journey. All seems fine until he receives a visit from the angel of death and is taken ill. Might he too be mortal?
