Blue-Tongue Films 1

(Blue-Tongue Films 1) Director: various, AUS, 0000, original version / Czech and English subtitles, 88 min

In the world of cinema the Australian association Blue-Tongue Films stands as a unique phenomenon. Seven filmmakers, each very different than the others, cooperate and help one another make their films and have already created twenty short and five feature films. Their production was screened within the Sundance, Cannes or Berlin film festivals and some were nominated for Oscars.

This group of friends rather than a film company in the conventional sense was created in 1996 and currently comprises of Nash Edgerton, Joel Edgerton, Kieran Darcy-Smith, David Michôd, Luke Doolan, Spencer Susser and Mirrah Foulkes. None of them studied a film school, there is no shared aesthetics and no joint target other than to put a film on the screen. But if you want to look for a common denominator in their production, you will find a strange combination of realism with genre film stereotypes and a mixture of violence and a dark black humour. Their production is gliding through various film genres and bringing surprising elements into them and undoubtedly represents the most interesting and often also the most entertaining of what could be seen on the screens in the past years. Three films were presented at the Prague Short Films Festival in the past and David Michôd’s feature debut Animal Kingdom was distributed in Czech cinemas.
