(Big Time) Director: Kaspar Astrup Schröder, DK, 2017, Danish, English / English subti, 90 min

Bjarke Ingels is a Danish architect who tries to defy all sorts of conventions which distances him from many of his peers. He founded the studio BIG and in just a few years became one of the world’s most progressive architects of the middle generation. He was named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2016. Each of his next projects is even larger than the previous one. His studio has just finished the design of The Spiral office tower in the heart of Manhattan, whose glass shell is wrapped in a ribbon of green terraces. However, Bjarke Ingels’ ambition is to build something that will shape the future of architecture and put his name in history. The documentary, directed by Kaspar Astrup Schröder, premiered in spring 2017 at the Copenhagen Architecture Festival and it is also a portrayal of the architect as an ordinary man, who experiences ups and downs and feels love as well as fear regarding his health problems.

Adam Gebrian about Big Time
Bjarke Ingels. If I really do not like something, then it is the statement that someone arouses extreme reactions only: love it or hate it, nothing in between. Almost always there comes into my mind the thought that it is not true for me, that my opinions always lie somewhere in between these two extremes. However, if there is somebody who would be close to such a definition, then it is Bjarke Ingels. The architect whose work was significantly influenced by his internship in the studio of the main character of another film that you can see at this festival (REM). Together with his Belgic colleague Julien de Smedt he founded a successful studio called Plot; they parted a few years later and there came BIG: Bjarke Ingels Group. Their super comprehensible and simplified presentations, their focus on measurable characteristics (sunshine, wind direction, view etc.) influenced the way that thousands of others think. For someone it is the right approach, for others it means disregard to cultural differences of particular countries. As Bjarke once said with some self-criticism (it was when we had an interview together for the magazine Era21 about his design of the new National Library in Prague): it could have stand anywhere, maybe with the exception of the place for which it was designed. The film represents a chance to learn something more about the person leading today the company that has in a very short time realised dozens of major buildings all around the world and has made a successful leap from Copenhagen to New York.

Gebrian versus: Komplex 8 House v Kodani
CZ 2017, 6 min,, Czech version
The architect Adam Gebrian comments on buildings in the Czech Republic and abroad that are worth seeing, be it the ones that have been built well or those that have met with less success. The unconventional apartment complex in the Ørestad district, built in the shape of the number eight, was designed by the Danish studio BIG.
