Philip Ursprung, Built Images: Herzog & de Meuron The Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron play a crucial role in contemporary architecture since the late 1980s. The lecture deals with the concept of the image and shows how this architecture can be theoretically located within the “iconic turn.” It will present an overview of the work of the architects and discuss the exhibition Herzog & de Meuron: Archeology of the Mind that was curated by Philip Ursprung in 2002.

Philip Ursprung is Professor of the History of Art and Architecture at ETH Zürich. He studied in Geneva, Vienna, and Berlin. He taught at Hochschule der Künste Berlin, the University of Zurich, Columbia University New York and the Barcelona Institute of Architecture. He was a visiting curator at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal where he curated Herzog & de Meuron: Archeology of the Mind and edited the catalogue Herzog & de Meuron: Natural History (2002). He is editor of Caruso St John: Almost Everything (2008). His most recent book is. Tom Emerson, Never Modern Tom Emerson will present projects by his London office, 6a architects and work by his students at ETH Zurich with reference to Bruno Latour and others. He will propose that re-use are no longer a subsets of architecture’s primary purpose of building new, but that re-use is now the primary architectural paradigm of the 21st century in the west. As Latour has put it, there is no such thing as design, there is only re-design.

Tom Emerson (b Paris, 1970) studied at the University of Bath, the Royal College of Art in London and the University of Cambridge. Founded 6a architects with Stephanie Macdonald in London in 2001. Recent projects include several contemporary art galleries in London and a new hall of residence for the University of Cambridge.

In 2012 6a architects received the Schelling Medal for architecture and an RIBA National Award. Following teaching positions at the University of Cambridge and the Architectural Association in London, he has been professor of architecture at ETH Zurich since 2010. The book Never Modern by 6a architects and Irénée Scalbert was published by Park Books in 2013.
