Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

(Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry) Director: Alison Klayman, USA, 2012, English-Chinese version / English and Czech subtitles, 91 min

In addition to being world famous for his work as an artist, Ai Weiwei connects human rights work and new media. This film takes us into the Beijing studio where, with the help of assistants, his ideas are turned into finished pieces of art. As well as his numerous exhibitions at world famous galleries, the artist attempts via various internet platforms to draw attention to events in China and stimulate activism in a Chinese society that lives in apathy and fear of repression from its own government. The documentary makes use of authentic materials, including footage from the hidden camera of Weiwei himself who, along with a group of friends, has been the target of police harassment for some time. In his uneven battle against the totalitarian regime, the persecuted activist artist tweets daily as @aiww on his own events, happenings in China and the arrest of lesser-known dissidents. The film, which last year won a special jury prize at Sundance, shows the life of a figure who, despite huge international respect, fights as a regular citizen for freedom and respect in his homeland.
