Kino Světozor

(Bronson) Director: Nicolas Winding Refn, GB, 2008, English version / Czech subtitles, 92 min

The film presents the story of a notorious bully and habitual criminal who prides himself on his hardman façade – a façade he augments by beating other inmates – as well as the façade he shows to the world through his nickname: Charles Bronson. Who is Michael Peterson, the UK’s most dangerous prisoner, a man who by the time the film was screened had spent some 34 years behind bars, 30 of them in solitary confinement? By means of his quintessential brutal aesthetics, Nicolas Winding Refn claims that we will never find out. Bronson is an image. And a film about him simply has to be a violent circus buffoonery. Pure glitter, which both the eccentric Danish director and Peterson adore.
