Documentary Mondays: Lean a Ladder Against Heaven
Documentary Mondays cycle will feature a new Czech documentary Lean a Ladder Against Heaven by Jana Ševčíková on Monday, October 20, starting at 8:45pm. Marian Kuffa is a priest in a small village of Zakovce in Slovakia. At his presbytery he cares for the homeless, former prisoners, boys and girls from orphanages, the handicapped and abused mothers with children. Altogether, the priest has hosted almost two hundred people. Some die, some are born, people come and go… A film about strong faith and the value of sacrifice, about how much one person is capable of giving for another, how much he loses like this as well as how much he wins. From November 30 to December 12, Aero and Světozor cinemas are hosting the second annual Asian film festival Filmasia. This year, the festival points its focus predominantly on the dynamic Taiwanese cinematography. The word "dynamic" is justified by the fact that over 20 years, Taiwanese cinematography has been among the world's most interesting. After the end of World War II and the civil was in China, the small island was sought by Chinese refugees and became a dictatorship which lasted until the end of the 70-ies. The development of Taiwan was also influenced by the U.S. military presence on the island. After the lifting of the censorship legislation, cinematography became one of the key art forms in the country. Catalogue to download here

The 2nd Prague Short Film Festival introduces 73 short films from all over the world in ten program categories. Three international competition blocks presenting an array of films shot since January 2005 will be completed by blocks of the best short films from Mexico, United Kingdom, and the German festival intefilm Berlin followed by films awarded at international festivals, first shorts of famous directors and experimental films.
