Tragedy, Story of Queensbridge
(Tragedy, Story of Queensbridge) Director: Booker Sim, USA, 2004, English version / Czech subtitles, 73 min
"You love to hear the story, again and again..." The legend of Queensbridge, the largest urban housing project in North America, has been a mainstay of hip-hop culture for twenty years, propelling artists from MC Shan to Nas into the game. This gritty, grainy documentary retells this story through the hard life and harder story of Tragedy Khadafi. Tragedy's father was shot dead before his birth, and as a child he hustled to support himself and his drug-addicted mother. Signed to his first deal at 16, he instead ended up in prison. Gaining political consciousness in lockdown, he emerged to release an acclaimed album, only to be eclipsed by rival rappers. Further jail time and many failed plans later, Tragedy is still keeping it real.
