Street Fight

Following his journeys to Jamaica and Brazil, Marshall Curry, the prize–winning independent documentary filmmaker whose main interests lie in religion, history, philosophy and the economy, sets up camp in Newark, US, to focus on a local election contest. It's a face off between two African Americans. Sharp Jones has held the post of mayor for sixteen years and has no intention of giving up his office. What's more, the conservative community has become so used to the four–term incumbent that it makes no demands for changes, even though for many there's much room for improvement.

The challenger is young Cory Booker, often accused of not being 'black enough' because of his high–achiever background. A bitter contest ensues during which the competent Booker is constantly having to deal with obstacles, ranging from his posters being torn down by the corrupt police force to not being given a chance to square up to his opponent.

Clocking the time remaining until Election Day, Curry follows the story in its complexity, providing many different points of view. While Booker allows him to roam freely behind the scenes of the election campaign and its preparations, James is full of hostility and refuses to cooperate in any way. This film is a powerful testimony revealing the fallacy of democracy and the brutality of political contest, bristling with false promises and intoxicating smiles... Street Fight is nominated on Oscar.
