All Good Citizens
(Všichni dobří rodáci) Director: Vojtěch Jasný, ČSSR, 1968, Czech version, 116 min
The film is an intriguing portrait of the Czech village from 1945 until the end of the fifties. It is a concise and poetic depiction of various life stories affected by the tragic political changes. Main heroes and heroines remind the viewer of archetypal characters in old Christian legends. The ethos and conscience of the village is impersonated by a farmer called František. His “Gospel” is genuine virtuousness grounded in patriarchal tradition and directed towards the heaven.
