Dieter Roth
(Dieter Roth) Director: Edith Jud, Německo, 2003, English version / French subtitles, 115 min
Dieter Roth is mentioned in one breath with Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys. The multitalent, born 1930 in Hannover and dead 1987 in Basle, was known as painter, drawer, graphic designer, poet and filmmaker. He understood chaos and order as anticlimaxes but though linked together. His big subject - for example his legendary chocolate figures - was the transience, break-up and disrepair of material, in which he included his own emotional and physical life and art. In reply of the question “How did you become an artist?” he said: “I don’t know how and whether”.
