The Road Home

A slight and wrinkled old woman persists that her deceased husband be carried home the proper way. No cars, no tractors. He must be carried by a group of man so that he does not forget “the road home”. Love, tradition and loyalty to the family are the subjects of this sentimental story by Zhang Yimou, the director of such masterpieces as Raise the Red Lantern (1991) or Shanghai Triad (1995). His films gradually move away from historical themes to more intimate and inner stories. This film, based on the novel Remembrance by Bao Shi, was awarded the Silver Bear at Berlin Film Festiva 1999.
