Romance for Bugle
(Romance pro křídlovku) Director: Otakar Vávra, ČSSR, 1966, Czech version, 84 min
A lyrical story about first love, death and disappointment, based on a poem of the same title. Four bars of the song "Memory of Hercules Spa" overheard in a village pub late one night are enough for one of the guests, who was just about to leave, to return and look at the band. Thus, acquaintances from the past meet after thirty years. Vojta, a student then, is now a schoolmaster; Viktor, today as before, travels with a touring group visiting village fairs. Years ago, both had fallen for the same girl - sixteen-year-old Terina. It was summer and Vojta had fallen in love for the first time. In the evenings, he used to meet Terina on a merry-go-round or in the countryside. Their encounters were brief. Vojta had to take care of his grandfather who had lost his memory after a stroke and Terina was closely watched by Viktor who had been promised the girl by her parents. One day Terina came to say good-bye. Her touring group's stand was over. Maybe they would see each other again in a year's time…
