Raulien’s District
(Rauliens Revier) Director: Alice Agneskirchner, NĚM, 1994, German version / English subtitles, 85 min
The police constable Hans Raulien is the most important person of the working quarter Duisburg-Bruckhausen in the Ruhr area, where today 70 percent of people are foreigners. Roughly one-half of the people are unemployed. Everybody has his own problems and everybody is coming to Mr. Raulien. Raulien´s Revier is a humorous documentary film about a grass-roots policeman who enjoys, but does not exploit, his authority and prefers to build on the trust of "his" people instead. The movie of the young director, who was still studying at the film-college in Babelsberg, when she produced this film, was seen almost on every documentary festival. Nothing is arranged, the interviews are real. There is no comment. That 's why you find in the movie unusual spontaneity and an uncommon closeness to the regarded people.
