Vanity fair

Historical drama with plenty of music made by an Indian director (Monsoon Wedding, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Salaam Bombai!). It takes place at the end of the Napoleonic wars and it is an ironic reflection of English society. Becky is a clever and ambitious daughter of a second-class painter and a French dancer, whereas Amelie is a naïve and slightly dull daughter of a share broker. They are both ready to do anything in order to become parts of the highest social elite. The film has been nominated for the prize in Venice. It is Julian Fellowes’ adaptation of W. M. Thackeray’s Vanity Fair. Julian Fellowes has been awarded an Oscar for the screenplay for Gosford Park.
