This Must Be the Place
(This Must Be the Place) Director: Paolo Sorrentino, I-F-IRL, 2011, English version / Czech subtitles, 118 min
Cheyenne, a retired rock star, is living off his royalties in Dublin. The death of his father, with whom he has not been in touch for years, snatches him from lethargy and he embarks on a quest to find the man responsible for his father’s humiliation suffered at a concentration camp in Poland during World War II. The discomforting existential road movie does retain the visual perfection typical of Sorrentino’s previous features, yet compared to them it is markedly whimsical and disjointed. The statement “Something’s wrong here”, the film’s leitmotiv, serves as a perfect definition of his singular poetics, ranging between absurd humour and existential anxiety.
