Race to the Bottom
(Závod ke dnu) Director: Vít Janeček, CZ, 2011, Czech version, 82 min
We live in the times of openness - the opportunities of flexible people are increasing. The faster the capital, the slower the adaptation of those who for various reason stagnate. The technical development has brought a release of large masses of people from serfdom and offered them a new social standing which was based on work. Work has thus become a new factor of socialization and enabled millions of people to improve their living conditions and... to reach a new degree of freedom. However, for the last fifty years larger and larger portion of production work is performed by machines, and the remaining manual human work is shifted due to higher profits into developing countries.
The philosopher Václav Bělohradský, the sociologist Jan Keller, the economist Ilona Švihlíková, the development expert Tomáš Tožička and several employees, trade unionists and unemployed reflect this topic in relation to the current situation in the czech republic and on the brackground of a varied spectre of human business enterprise - from textile, glass, cars or matches to international IT business. This all is related to the context of crucial global trends.
