My Kidnapper

My Kidnapper

(My Kidnapper) Director: M. Henderson - K. Horne, GB, 2010, English and Spanish version / Czech and English subtitles, 82 min

In 2003, the world's media reported on the kidnapping of a group of tourists in the Colombian mountains. British national Mark Henderson was among those taken, and he spent more than three months in captivity. Less than a year after his release, he got a big surprise when he received an email from one of his Marxist guerrilla captors, a man called Antonio who tried to explain the reasons for the kidnapping. After five years of mutual correspondence, Henderson and three fellow captives decide to return to the scene of the crime and meet with Antonio in person. Amidst the beauty of the Colombian jungle, which became a nightmare for those who were kidnapped, a gripping reconstruction of events begins. (The Radiohead-style score only adds to the effect). Using clips of television news reports on the kidnapping as well as the diary entries and recollections of all those involved, including Antonio, the filmmakers brilliantly recreate all the twists and turns of these dramatic events. They come to the conclusion that the kidnappers were actually motivated by their desire to draw the world's attention to the atrocities that Colombian paramilitary units commit against villagers in that part of the country.
