The Mines of Hell
(The Mines of Hell) Director: Olivier Baudry de Vaux, F, 2008, English / Czech subtitles, 52 min
Coltan or gray gold, as it is often nicknamed - is present in cell phones, computers and satellite navigators. This metal is extracted exclusively from the rich sub-soils of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In The mines of hell, we get to meet Congolese miners who go 150 feet underground, daily, for the paltry sum of 1 dollar per day. Meanwhile, above their heads, a civil war is waging, complete with regular pillaging of resources.
This poignant documentary demonstrates how the young Congolese democracy is striving to establish long-lasting redistribution of mine resources, as well as an efficient government and effective education for the masses.
