(Another Year) Director: Mike Leigh, GB, 2010, English version / Czech subtitles, 129 min
This is the story of a happy elderly couple that functions as the only stable point in the unhappy, lonely lives of their friends and relatives. As their confidants, Tom and Gerri get to see directly into the core of their tangled lives, into their friendships and loneliness, their hope and despair, and into the emergence of the new and the extinction of the old. This would be fine except for one unmarried friend who falls in love with their son! Director Mike Leigh has been nominated for an Oscar six times, and is sometimes called “the anthropologist with a camera”. In this film, he’s come up with another great study of human destiny.
