(Cities for people) Director: Lars Oxfeldt Mortensen, DK, 2000, Dutch / English and Czech subtitles, 58 min

Cities should be made for people. But in times with expanding urbanisation on a global scale, architecture and city planning is not always improving for the benefit of humans. Too many cars, too much noise, no spaces to relax are often the predominant circumstances for the residents. This film shows how we can improve the qualities of public spaces in urban areas. The story brings humorous examples of how human behaviour is directly determined by how cities are constructed. It demonstrates how architecture and city planning can improve urban climate conditions and expand summer for several months. The film features Jan Gehl, one of the main architects behind the transformation of Copenhagen into one of the most liveable, sustainable and bicycle-friendly cities. There are examples throughout the film from Reykjavik, Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen.

The partner of the screening is the civic association AutoMat – initiative for sustainable transport. Followed by an audience discussion with philosopher, architect and city planner Petr Kratochvíl and with representative of the civic association Auto-Mat.
