(Gainsbourg, vie héroïque) Director: Joann Sfar, F - USA, 2010, French version / Czech subtitles, 130 min
This musical biopic captures the life of French singing legend Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991). The film depicts Gainsbourg’s childhood in occupied Paris and the development of his career from a poet to composer of world-famous songs. Other legends from French music and film appear in the film, such as Boris Vian and Brigitte Bardot. However, the author is mostly interested in Gainsbourg’s love affairs, which were an inseparable part of his bohemian lifestyle. When writing the script, he did not stick rigidly to the historical facts but added a large dose of fantasy. The narration is therefore rendered unusual by its dreamy, mystical elements. The film was based on the director’s graphic novel and it excels thanks to the efforts of the actors and the stand-out camera work.
