FAMU Burmese Films

Directed by the Burmese scholarship students of the FAMU education project during the workshops in Burma, stay at the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) or within the German Yangon Film School project, a series of 5-7 short films will be introduced at the One World festival by Vít Janeček – a documentary maker and FAMU lecturer working with young and talented Burmese filmmakers. The screenings will be followed by a discussion with two young female directors of Burma.

Achieving its greatest fame at the turn of the 1950s, the Burmese cinematography has almost ceased to exist. In co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and the Embassy of the French Republic in Yangon, FAMU organises talent workshops in Burma for four consecutive years. Attended by artists of various professions, students not allowed to pursue their academic desires and talented young people with no opportunity to develop their talent in the local conditions, the wide-focused workshops help short films of various genres come to light. At the end of the workshop sessions, the organisers select two best students who win a year’s FAMU International scholarship in Prague.
