Prizraki belyh nochey / Night Waltz: The Music of Paul Bowles
(Přízraky Bílých Nocí - Phantoms of White Nights / Noční valčík: Paul Bowles - Night Waltz: The Music of Paul Bowles) Director: Dmitri Frolov / Owsley Brown, RUS / USA - Morocco, 2003, original version / Czech sub-subtitles, 84 min
- A playful sideways glance at the immense pomposity and extraordinary literary heritage of Saint Petersburg, filmed at the time of the city's 300th anniversary during the infamous white nights. The city as phantom and inspiration, the flaneur as ironic intellectual hooligan. Sheer enjoyment as unpracticed choreography.
- A glimpse into the musical past of expatriate American writer Paul Bowles, filmed shortly before his death in 1999. Best known as a novelist, Bowles was also a composer of wide-ranging scope and a collaborator of Orson Welles, Tennessee Williams and Jean-Paul Sartre. A pioneer in the study of non-Western music, Bowles eventually settled in Morocco. His compositions reflected his extensive travels, and this can still be glimpsed decades later, as he speaks of rhythm as "the basis of music", drums with his fingers and confesses to "living in music" long after shifting his focus to the literary. The film shows Bowles at his most charming and peaceful, an elderly listener engrossed by the simple beauty of a profound traditional performance.
