Matisyahu / Favela Rising
(Matisyahu / Zmrtvýchvstání Favely - Favela Rising) Director: David Baugnon / Jeff Zimbalist - Matt Mochary, USA / BRA - USA, 2004, original version / Czech sub-subtitles, 92 min
- A short portrait of the Brooklyn-based reggae singer, beat boxer and rapper, whose debut album became a top 5 reggae seller in the US. The film details his close relationship to religion and music, his conversion to Hasidic Judaism and his mission to awaken spirituality in others through his music.
- Favela Rising documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlemnt) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends in an epic spate of urban violence, Anderson Sá is a former drug soldier turned social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro's most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance forms, he rallies his community to counteract endemic and violent oppression, enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police. Just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson's grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its burgeoning success, a tragic accident threatens to silence it forever.
