Czech Hump
(Pahrbek český) Director: Lucie Králová, CZ, 2009, Czech version, 58 min
Some people come to Sněžka, the Czech Republic's highest mountain, to get married, to take their mind off things, and sometimes even to commit suicide. Most of the million people who visit this place, however, are happy enough to enjoy the beautiful view and get something to drink. When woodworm finally destroyed the popular Česká Bouda ("Bohemian Chalet") building in 2004, an idiosyncratic local businesswomen managed to persuade the authorities to erect a new post office in its place. She assigned the job to the renowned architects Martin Rajniš and Patrik Hoffman. Inspired by the teachings of Zen and Dogon buildings, they wanted to show that modern architecture has its place even on the peak of this nationally significant mountain. Shot over a long period of time, Lucie Králová's documentary not only records the various twists and turns connected with the construction of the Anežka post office, but also illustrates its national, historical, architectural and environmental contexts in an entertaining way.
