The Clone Returns Home
(Kuron wa kokyo wo mezasu) Director: Kanji Nakajima, J, 2008, Japanese version / English and Czech subtitles, 110 min
Produced by Wim Wenders, the new contemplative film by Kanji Nakajima is – similar to his previous film The Box – a meditation on the human existence that combines a sci-fi setting with philosophical motives. This time the author focuses on questions about the human soul and identity in regard to cloning. Two clones of an astronaut killed in an accident are brought to life. One of them has the astronaut’s soul and the other his memories. The film, rich on melancholy, metaphorical scenes and striking visual compositions, bears a strong resemblance to the works of Andrei Tarkovsky.
