Sweep It Up, Again
(Kehraus, wieder) Director: Gerd Kroske, D, 2006, original version / Czech and English subtitles, 100 min
Documentary maker Gerd Kroske began filming a group of street sweepers in Leipzig soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This time-consuming project has given rise to three full-length films about individuals who have not let go of either their dreams or their friendship, despite stigmatising work on the streets and periods of unemployment. Two of the project's original protagonists did not live to see its completion, while others fell to a lower point than they believed possible. This unsentimental documentary shows how the worst off have had to get to grips with social changes, and the relationship society has towards them.
