Escape From Luanda
(Escape From Luanda) Director: Phil Grabsky, UK - ANG, 2007, Portuguese version / Czech and English subtitles, 72 min
Ravaged by decades of war and crushing poverty, Angola and its people bear scars both physical and emotional. For most there is little prospect of escaping the misery, but three hard-working students at the country's only music school find hope in art, doggedly pursuing their dreams in the face of material want, family opposition and even violent prejudice. Joana keeps on drumming while trying to reclaim her malnourished children from an abusive ex. Alfredo looks to leave the slums behind as Angola's first classical piano star. Domingas walks three hours a day to school even as her husband walks out on her and their five kids. An inspiring portrait of people for whom music represents a respite from a dreadful reality and a promise of deliverance.
