Jean Painlevé, French director, doctor and son of the mathematician and politician Paul Painlevé, started to shoot scientific documentary films in 1925. He managed to infuse the films with his own artistic views. He enriched the scientific topics with aesthetic and poetic attraction, using original music tracks or picture collages. Painlevé established the Institute of Scientific Film and was the chairman of the Association of French Film Clubs from 1946 to 1956.
