The Magician
(Ansiktet) Director: Ingmar Bergman, SWE, 1958, Swedish version / Czech and English subtitles, 100 min
Sweden in 1846. Dr. Albert Emanuel Vogler, a mesmerist and magician, is travelling to Stockholm with his troupe, including his wife, Manda, disguised as a man. They are stopped at a customs post outside the city and brought before three officials---the local Consul, the Chief of Police, and a Medical Officer named Vergérus. Vogler is accused of being a charlatan and is subjected to a harsh interrogation, even though he pretends to be dumb. The troupe stays overnight in the Consul´s house and the next morning the officials order Vogler to give a private performance. The doctor in particular is fascinated by Vogler, and although he speaks sceptically about his powers, he is terrified by Vogler´s tricks during an “autopsy“ in the attic. Just as the officials believe that they have unmasked their opponent, however, a message comes from the Royal court, summoning Vogler before the King to present his magic turns. Vogler drives away with his colleagues in sunshine and triumph.
