Smiles of a Summer Night

Fredrik Egerman, a prosperous lawyer, attends the theatre with his young wife, Anne, and later goes backstage to arrange a rendezvous with his former mistress, Désirée Armfeldt. Désirée's lover of the moment is Count Malcolm, who is affronted by the presence of Egerman. The two encounter each other again on a country estate. Henrik, Egerman's son by a previous marriage, is studying theology, but he is constantly being ogled by Petra, the maid. Henrik finds himself drawn to Anne, who has been neglected by Egerman. Egerman is seduced by the Count's wife, Charlotte, the upshot of which being that he has to fight a Russian roulette duel with his rival.
