Cowboys & Communists

Ein Ostberliner Wohnhaus, das früher eine traditionelle, staatlich geführte Gastwirtschaft beherbergt hat und in dem jetzt ein Amerikaner ein skurriles Szenelokal betreibt: Besser könnte die Szenerie für einen Culture Clash zwischen Ost und West gar nicht sein.

In dem Gebäude lebt Horst Woitalla, ein alteingesessener Kommunist, der an die Werte des damaligen DDR-Systems geglaubt hat und auch heute noch dazu steht. Der schlimmste Tag für den ehemaligen Journalisten war der Tag des Mauerfalls. Der Cowboy ist Wally Potts, Künstler und Küchenchef aus L.A. Er betreibt das erfolgreiche Restaurant „White Trash Fast Food“ im Erdgeschoss, in dem schon Mick Jagger seinen Cheeseburger gegessen hat. Bis spät in die Nacht hinein geben sich die skurrilen Gestalten, Travestiekünstler und andere Szenegestalten die Klinke in die Hand, um sich die wilden Live Performances bei lauter Musik anzuschauen – Grund genug für Horst und einige andere Bewohner des Hauses, Beschwerde einzulegen, da sie sich in ihrem ehemals so ruhigen Viertel gestört fühlen.

In Cowboys & Communists prallen zwei Welten und zwei politische Systeme aufeinander. Gedreht wurde auch auf Super-8, um die Nostalgie der verlorenen Welten nachzuempfinden, in denen die beiden Protagonisten immer noch leben.

There used to be a typical socialist pub on the ground floor of an apartment building in East Berlin. Now a cowboy has come and turned it into a typical American pub. This results in an explosive clash between East and West. An old communist called Horst Woitalla lives in the building. He still believes in the values of the former GDR. For this former journalist, the fall of the Berlin Wall was the worst day of his life. Wally Potts is a cowboy, artist and chef from LA. His business prospers on the building’s ground floor selling “White Trash Fast Food”. Mick Jagger himself even polished off one of his cheeseburgers. Potts’s nighttime bar soon attracts various eccentrics, drag queens and other figures from the local scene. There are wild things going on night after night with lots of loud music. This is a good enough reason for Horst and several other tenants to complain to the authorities, as they feel that their quiet neighbourhood is being disrupted.

In Cowboys and Communists, two worlds and two political systems collide. The director shot it on Super 8 mm film so as to evoke the nostalgia for the lost era in which the protagonists still live.
