Fotball Under Cover

Ayat Najafi und Marlene Assmann sind sowohl mutig als auch hartnäckig. Und sie lieben Fußball. Dank dieser Voraussetzungen gelingt ihnen die Durchsetzung eines politisch höchst brisanten Projektes: In der Islamischen Republik Iran tritt Ende April 2006 zum ersten Mal die Frauenfußballnationalmannschaft des Landes an – und dass vor 1000 begeisterten Zuschauerinnen. Gegnerinnen in dem denkwürdigen Freundschaftsspiel sind die Kickerinnen einer Berliner Bezirksmannschaft, in der Marlene als Linksaußen bolzt. Viele der Berlinerinnen haben einen Migrationshintergrund und teilen mit ihren iranischen Kolleginnen den muslemischen Glauben.

Football under Cover zeigt die monatelange, oft nervenzerrende Planungsarbeit , die Vorbereitungen beider Mannschaften, zu der in Berlin auch das Lernen des iranischen Sittenkodexes gehört, bis hin zur frenetisch umjubelten Begegnung der ungewöhnlichen Gegnerinnen in Teheran. Ein Fußballspiel wird hier zum Symbol für Widerstand und den Wunsch nach weiblicher Selbstbestimmung.

Der Dokumentarfilm wurde auf mehreren internationalen Filmfestivals, unter anderem bei der Berlinale (Teddy Award 2008), ausgezeichnet.

Ayat Najafi and Marlene Assmann are courageous and most importantly very stubborn. And they love football. Thanks to that they manage to push through a politically brisant project – for the first time ever the National Women’s Football Team of the Islamic Republic of Iran plays a match in front of the eyes of a thousand female football fans. In this friendly match their opponents are women players from a small amateur Berlin team in which Marlene plays the left wing. Some of the Berlin players are migrants who have a number of things in common with their Iranian colleagues, for example their Muslim faith. Football under Cover shows a long and nerve-wracking organizational process, the preparation matches of both teams, and the encounter of the Berlin players with Iranian habits and morality codex. The climax comes when the two unusual opponents meet on Tehran’s football stadium accompanied by boisterous cheering. A football match becomes the symbol of defiance and the need for self-identification of all women.

The documentary has won many international awards, for example the “Teddy Award” at this year’s Berlinale.
