Orphanage
(El Orfanato) Director: Antonio Bayona, MEX - ESP, 2007, Spanish version / Czech subtitles, 100 min
After thirty years Laura, her husband Carlos and their adoptive son Simon return to a decaying villa, which she would like to repair and turn into a home for disabled children. The house is a former orphanage, where she herself has spent a large part of her childhood. Little Simon slowly explores the surroundings of the villa, on his own with only imaginary friends. His childhood fantasies gain on a sharply real aspect when Simon suddenly disappears. The Spanish horror Orphanage turns away from streams of blood and returns to the classical form of a scary story. Director Bayona brilliantly used all the genre clichés to make a story about mother’s love.
