Shit and Chicks
(Shit and Chicks) Director: Kees van der Geest, NIZ, 2006, original version / Czech subtitles, 10 min
The film's protagonist is Rogation, a 64–year–old man from south–western Ghana. His whole life has been spent as a soldier in the marines and he returns to his home village as a pensioner. However, he has never forgotten the unique method of feeding chickens which he learned from his father and which has been passed down from generation to generation. The basic element is cow dung, which is stuffed into a little barrel, rinsed with water and then buried near a certain tree. It wouldn't be fair to reveal what happens next. Suffice to say that thanks to this method Mr Rogation does not have to buy expensive feed for his chickens. This calmly paced picture by first–time Dutch director Kees van der Geest features neither dialogue nor commentary, but is fully focused on Rogation's sophisticated and completely natural breeding method.
