Lake of Fire
(Lake of Fire) Director: Tony Kaye, USA, 2006, original version / Czech subtitles, 152 min
Lake of Fire takes a brave look at abortion, one of the most divisive subjects in the United States today. The title refers to the Christian vision of hell, which awaits all of those in favour of the legal termination of pregnancy. Fifteen years in the making, this film by no means offers viewers an unequivocal and definitive answer to the question of abortion. On the contrary, director Tony Kaye provides space to the most diverse and antithetical of views. Presenting points of view from across the spectrum, interviews with both Christian fundamentalists and free–choice advocates, doctors, professors of sociology and politics (among them Noam Chomsky, Alan Dershowitz and Randall Terry), Kaye confronts the mental and physical results of abortion, bringing an unusual complexity to the subject. This black and white picture is in its own way colourful, transcending the run–of–the–mill abortion debate.
