Querelle
(Querelle) Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder, NĚM+FRA, 1982, German / Czech subtitles, 106 min
The last film of R. W. Fassbinder (based on the cult novel Querelle de Brest by Jean Genet) caused a scandal at the Venice IFF but became an essential part of film history. Although the sailor Querelle is strong, he is also an outcast. The crimes he commits free him, and this freedom gives him power. The drenched colour, bulging crotches, phallic sets and extraordinarily tight fitting outfits add to an air of homoeroticism seldom seen in film. A tale of passion, violence, degradation and intense sexual submission.
The screening at Mezipatra honour the 25th anniversary of Fassbinder’s death.
