Lilies
(Les Feluettes) Director: John Greyson, Kanada, 1996, English / Czech subtitles, 87 min
In l952, bishop Bilodeau makes a visit to a prison to hear the last confession of a dying inmate Simon Doucet. The confession reveals itself to be a trap. The bishop is suddenly a hostage and its role turns into a confessant. Simon's fellow prisoners transform the chapel into a theatrical stage and start re-enacting their 40 years old memories.
The story skips back and forth from the crude stage set to 1912. Simon falls in love with Valier. Jealous Bilodeau is following all their steps and Valier is accidentally dying in obscure circumstances. Although Simon was found guilty of his murder, it seems that only the bishop knows the whole story. All characters are played by men, emphasising the idea that gender itself is a kind of performance.
