Despotic and self-sufficient teacher Barbara (Judi Dench) rules her class with an iron hand, in private, however, her life is lonely and without friends. With the arrival of a new teacher Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) things are bound to change. Sheba seems to be precisely the kind of person, who could become the dear friend Barbara has always been waiting for. But then Barbara learns of Sheba’s passionate relationship with one of the young students, and friendship turns into mutual animosity, with secrets and obsessions coming to the surface…
