A Lion's Trail
() Director: Francois Verster, VB, JAR, 2003, English-Zulu-Xhosa / Czech subtitles, 56 min
Solomon Linda was the composer of Africa’s most famous song, “Mbube”, also known as “Wimoweh” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Unfortunately, he and his estate are also the victims of a decades-long swindle of epic proportions.
Winner of the 2006 Emmy Award for News and Documentary, the film follows the righteous anger and unflagging energy of activist-journalist Rian Malan as he struggles to build international awareness of the plight of Linda’s heirs, who live in dire poverty while the song is used as the centerpiece of the Disney corporations’ most successful musical.
Also featuring outstanding performances from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Manhattan Brothers, Pete Seeger and The Tokens.
The screening will be preceded by a selection of South African music videos courtesy of Gallo Music Group. Presented in association with the Embassy of South Africa and the British Council.
The partner of the screening is Music on Film-Film on Music.
