Herkules

(Herkules) Director: Lidia Duda , POL, 2004, original version / Czech sub-subtitles, 27 min

When the coalmines in Poland were closed down, most of the people from the surrounding area lost their jobs. Today their families live on the edge of cities and find themselves on the margins of society. As time goes by, people lose the motivation to change their lives for the better and their days unwind in a desperate stereotypical rhythm. Twelve-year-old Hercules (as he is nicknamed at home) trudges every day to the collection centre with a heavy load or collects coal by the railway line to keep a fire going at home. This documentary offers a completely uncensored view of a family of unemployed alcoholics, who haven't the slightest inhibitions in front of the camera. The atmosphere in Hercules's home consists of obscenities, lies and disorder. Despite the fact that the parents take advantage of their son, the boy constantly strives to win their love and attention. But when the time for Hercules's First Communion approaches, even his parents are affected by the festive atmosphere. It seems that traditional rituals still have the power - at least for a while - to prick people's consciences and remind them of important values.
