Octopusalarm
(Tintenfischalarm) Director: Elisabeth Scharang, RAK, 2005, German version / English subtitles / Czech sub-subtitles, 107 min
Alex was born an intersexual - a person who falls between two genders. By the time he was two, he had been surgically transformed into a female. When he grew up and could begin to think about his real identity, he discovered that he felt was a man. He decided to embark on a long fight to change his gender and to assert his true self.
He also began to get involved in activities to raise awareness and to defend the rights of intersexuals, as he wants to ensure that children born with the same condition will not have to endure similar traumatic experiences. The filmmaker follows this activist over the course of several years. She shoots footage of the journeys he makes and interlaces this with an extraordinarily intimate video diary.
Because it was shot over time, the film becomes an absorbing story, which maps the growing bond between the protagonist and the filmmaker and begins to uncover many details from his past.
A progressive storyline slowly emerges from this fascinating collage, which is interrupted in places by moments that cause us to contemplate our own prejudices and which give us room to gradually sympathise more and more with this difficult destiny.
