Goya’s Ghosts
(Goya’s Ghosts) Director: Miloš Forman, ŠPA, 2006, English version / Czech subtitles, 114 min
Madrid at the end of the 18. century is dominated by the Holy Inquisition. Young Ines – Goya‘s model – is one of the victims of fra Lorenzo. Ines is one of Goya’s ghosts – the sources of inspiration for his art, which reflects the drastic transformation Europe had undergone at that time. While Francisco Goya remains in the background, the foreground is occupied by his uncompromisingly ambitious friend Lorenzo, whose wish it is to change the course of history. The rebellion against any dictatorship and the stress placed upon spiritual and intellectual freedom become the focal points of the new film by Miloš Forman, the director of One Flew Over Cockoo’s Nest (1975) and Amadeus (1984).
