The Meloun Route
(Put lubenica) Director: Branko Schmidt, Chorvatsko - Bosna a Hercegovina, 2006, Croatian version / English subtitles / translated to Czech, 90 min
The Melon Route is a tale inspired by the true story of twelve illegal immigrants into Croatia, who drowned in the Sava River that flows along the border with Bosnia. The accident is told through the eyes of a young Chinese girl, who loses her father in the Sava. She develops a relationship with an ex-soldier of the Croatian Army, a rehabilitated drug addict suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, who had lost everything in the recent war. The language and the cultural barrier between the two main characters add a special dimension to the film, imbued by the painful understanding of how difficult it is to bear a burden that you will never be able to be rid of: your place of birth.
