(Leben ausser Kontrolle - Von Genfood und Designerbabies) Director: Bertram Verhaag, NĚM, 2004, , 95 min
In the middle of the 1980's the key for gene manipulation was discovered for plants, animals and humans. Twenty years after these first attempts, the creators of this alarming documentary film decided to study the effects that the controversial genetic technology had brought to humanity. In the surroundings of the Indian town of Hyderabad, the infertility of the genetically modified cotton has caused many local farmers to solve their hopeless situation by donating one of their kidneys or committing suicide. On an ecological farm in Canada, the wind has blown such a large amount of genetically modified seeds from the neighboring fields that the local farmers were forced to abandon the year's crop. And in Iceland a law was passed which requires all citizens of this country to hand over samples of their genetic code, which will eventually be provided to a private company. Genetically modified salmon in North America are able to double in size several times a year, are more aggressive, more prone to disease and die earlier. Do we truly know the impact that genetically modified food will have on our health? Is genetic engineering the key to solving the problems of food shortages in the Third World or rather an effective way for large multinational firms to control small farmers?
